FARGO – Mona Fagerwick was skeptical at first. But she decided to give light therapy a try to better cope with the bleak symptoms that go beyond a simple case of the winter blues.
Fagerwick had been diagnosed years ago with seasonal affective disorder, a depressive mental health syndrome better known as SAD.
She’s taken medication for depression for years but still found she couldn’t shake off the effects of SAD that settled in every year as the leaves fell and the snow followed.
So last winter she found a light that met the recommended standards for treating SAD – including illumination of 10,000 lux and a filter for ultraviolet rays – and gave it a try.
An administrative assistant in Fargo, Fagerwick found a light that could fit on her desk. She turns it on every morning and leaves it on for an hour to ensure a good half hour of exposure, allowing for time she’s away from her work station.
“The light has helped tremendously,” she says. “Mine sits right by my computer monitor, so it hits my eyes pretty much all the time.”
